Week 2: Redesign an airline boarding pass and Expressive Words
Redesign an airline boarding pass
My priorities for this redesign were to make the information more legible. I decided to use a hierarchy of information that reads the ticket from left to right and from top to bottom. To have standardized legibility I used Helvetica Neue Bold, Medium and Light. Helvetica Neue in Bold weight is used in the words “Boarding Pass” as a header of the ticket. The medium-weight is used to label each section of the content, such as Origin, Destination, Date or Passenger’s name. The light-weight it is used to fill the information, for example, the name of the cities and airports.
A boarding pass is used when the passenger has already arrived at the airport. The boarding pass also has the functionality of confirming the information of the flight and let the passengers move through the airport until they are seated in the plane.
For this redesign, I designed a header that identified the ticket as a boarding pass, provides information about TSA status and shows airline logos.
The principal content section of the boarding pass is separate information around three major sections. The first section indicates the passenger’s name, bags check-in and Flight number. I left an available negative space next to the name so longer names have more space to be printed. The second section gives general information about the flight. The third section provides the user with boarding information.
Information of the boarding pass related to references such as confirmation numbers or operational information is at the bottom of the ticket. This information is important, but not used frequently.
After the passenger has boarded the plane, the most essential information about the flight it is also available on the tear-away part of the ticket.
Here below I showed how I tried to use the grid system to balance the content on the ticket. In my experience, it was hard to manage a symmetric design, however, I tried to keep a similar space of the content.
For this redesign task, I used for the first time the software Sketch. In my opinion, it was a great opportunity to have an introduction to this environment.
Other Exploration
Below is another possibility of the layout that I explored.
Expressive Words
Finding expressive words it is not as easy as it sounds. It took me a lot of time to find and choose which words I want to use for this task. However, once I started the assignment I had a few other ideas and words that I can use. I kept the last 3 ideas that I worked: Fall, Blur and Depth. I completed this assignment in Adobe Illustrator.
Fall
For this word a decided to use Avenir Next — Ultra Light font. I chose this font because it gave a fragile look to the word. The word has no caps and the last two letters lost balance and they are falling.
Blur
For the word Blur, I did a few iterations. I tried a white background with different levels of blurriness. The first option used Helvetica Neue — Condensed Bold font. the second option I used Avenir next — Ultra Light font.
In the end, I used a colored background version.
For this version, I decided to use the Futura — Condensed Medium font.
Depth
For word Depth, I was trying to create a 3d effect to give the visual meaning of the word. Luckily, I found a video tutorial that helped me achieve that visual effect. The video is Isometric Text Effect — Illustrator Tutorial. For this word, I decided to play with the decentralization of the word.
Because the word is position in perspective, I also apply the use of Kerning. I had to open the space between letters to have more readability.
For this word a decided to use PT Sans — Narrow.
Other Explorations
Bellow are other possibilities of expressive words I explored.
